Yesterday was an art field trip: We went to Charlotte to buy a painting, and then to Davidson to give one away.
The gallery in Charlotte is named, "Center of the Earth," and it's located in the Art District known as "NoDa," or North Davidson Street. It is a class act. First thing you notice is that the range of painting styles and techniques is quite broad; secondly, you notice that all of it is good. I had seen a painting there last October and had fallen in love with it, wistful that I didn't have the money to buy it. Since it hadn't sold by July, Ruth Lyons, the owner, e-mailed us that it was still available. I realized that I couldn't live without it....so it now rests on the bed in the guest room as I decide where to hang it.
It is called "Little Red Tree," by Scott Hill, an Atlanta artist. It is beautiful! I woke up this morning thinking about it, and how smart I was to bring something so lovely into my home.
What kind of world would it be without the beauty in our lives, and without the capability of making our lives beautiful?

- My first attempt to enter the world of fine art was through academic painting at the University of Texas at Austin. I learned what painting was, and, disappointingly, that I couldn’t do it. I left painting as one would leave a failed marriage. It was some years later that I approached making art through making crafts. Since then, I have come to regard fine crafts as fine art: The difference between the two exist on a theoretical level only, because a line separating them cannot be drawn—at least, not for me. In a world made of both “art” and “craft” I have found my home. My artwork seems to best be called “Crafted Paintings.” Still mindful of the principles of design, they are part collage, part mixed media painting, part constructions. They are likely to run off in any of these directions, or others, as the spirit moves them. That spirit expands most successfully when it is beautiful, whimsical, colorful, and rich. These pieces celebrate life in one aspect of it or another, and they seek to create joy in the heart of the viewer. View my art at www.artbycollage.com
